Once a professional dancer, Shanti Lowry showcased her moves alongside Shaggy and toured with renowned artists such as Chaka Khan and Earth Wind and Fire. While dancing has always been a powerful outlet for her, her passion for CrossFit provided the raw and primal emotions needed for her upcoming movie, Persona, as an actor. M&F delved into her journey.
Persona, a movie produced and starred by Lowry (known for her roles in NYPD Blue, Murder in the First, and an Emmy nomination for her part as Yolanda in Bronx SIU), boasts a captivating premise. Lowry elaborates, “It revolves around a woman who awakens in intense pain with no recollection of how she got there. She discovers a head wound and a badly bruised ankle, propelling her into a house-bound quest to discern her predicament and the cause of her suffering.”
Shanti Lowry’s ‘Method’ Acting Technique with CrossFit in Persona
To authentically portray her character’s grit, Lowry employed a ‘method’ acting approach by tapping into her passion for CrossFit, effectively simulating the mental and physical strains her character would endure. Lowry shares with M&F, “I chose to engage in intense workouts before filming, pushing myself to the point of being extremely sore. I performed open workouts in CrossFit, with relentless repetitions within a given timeframe, until I experienced what we call T-Rex arms. It was a deliberate attempt to embody waking up with inexplicable pain and discomfort, questioning every movement.”
Burning herself out with CrossFit workouts infused an additional layer into her performance, demanding her to maintain the intensity throughout the shoot. “I had to sustain that level throughout the movie while juggling breastfeeding, production responsibilities, and attempting to find some rest,” chuckles the talented artist. “CrossFit taught me to handle heavy weights and high volumes. I believe it translates on screen; the struggle in movement and the slowness. The entire movie felt like a challenging and rewarding workout!”
As Persona gears up for release at upcoming film festivals, its arrival on our screens is imminent. “It’s truly a dream come true,” expresses Shanti, reflecting on the completion of the project. “It’s undeniably my most cherished accomplishment.”
Her next aspiration? Mastering the muscle-up, naturally!
